Club Description
Pyecombe Golf Club is situated within the South Downs National Park, a few miles north of Brighton. It is a thriving club with around 500 members and a well-deserved reputation as a good test of golf on a beautiful Downland course, and a warm and friendly welcome in the clubhouse.
The 18 hole course was established in 1894 and initially designed by James Braid. In 2016 the Club’s efforts towards maintaining and conserving the natural environment of the course were recognised with the award of the STRI ‘Environmental Golf Club of the Year.’
Later this year our Managing Secretary will retire and we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to build on his legacy, to take on the day to day management of the club, and to drive forward the implementation of the Management Committee’s strategic plans.

Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate -

  • Excellent leadership skills and the ability to inspire the team that provide clubhouse and course services at Pyecombe
  • Superb interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate easily and clearly with members, visitors, and the wider golfing world

  • The skills to effectively organise and manage the day to day running of the club including the management of financial resources

  • A love of golf and of the traditions and cultures that make a successful members’ club

It is anticipated that the final selection and job offer will be concluded by the end of May 2018. It is hoped that the successful candidate will commence their role as near as possible to the beginning of September 2018, thus providing up to a two month handover period with the outgoing Managing Secretary.

Job Advert
Role Overview
To manage the day to day operations of Pyecombe Golf Club within the budgets and policies set by the Club’s Management Committee. To drive the implementation of the Club’s strategic plans for the course, and for members’ services.
The responsibilities of the Managing Secretary will be delegated by the Management Committee as set out in the Terms of Employment as agreed as part of the individual’s contract. The Managing Secretary will be responsible to the Chairman of the Management Committee for their overall performance.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Major Objectives

  • Plan resources and deliver cost effective, efficient support services to the members of the Club making optimum use of modern management methods and technology.

  • Have executive responsibility for the running of the administration of the Club and its premises within the contents of an annual business plan and approved budget.

  • Be responsible for the performance of all staff in the Club within the administration area and oversee the work of Heads of Greenkeeping and Bar and Catering.

  • To ensure compliance with all Statutory Regulations including Health & Safety, Data Protection, Safeguarding, Personnel & Employment Law.

Administration and Support Services

  • Manage the provision of office services, including:

  • Membership details.

  • Communication and marketing

    • Collection of subscriptions

    • Recruitment of new members

    • Communication with members

    • Promotion and marketing of club services and events

Bar, Catering and House
Work with Head of House and Manager of Bar and Catering to ensure;

  • Margins and targets for performance are met

  • Compliance with all Statutory and Local Government Regulations, including the Health & Safety at Work Act.

Finance, Accounting & Financial Management
Work with the Treasurer to:

  • Ensure that all cash receipts, banking arrangements and accounts are prepared and properly maintained

  • Arrange payment of all staff salaries and properly account for PAYE and NI contributions

  • Discharge the Club's liabilities through the timely payment of all authorised bills

Work with the Chair of the Green Committee:

  • To identify the key improvements to be made to the Course in order to support the attainment of the budget and business plan

  • To control and oversee the day to day working tasks of the Greenkeeping staff through the Head Greenkeeper

  • To ensure cooperation and compliance with the South Downs National Park Authority planning and regulations

  • To advise and support the Management Committee on the development of the Course Development Plan and the Course Management Policy

Other Management Tasks

  • Prepare for and attend Management and Captain Committee meetings as directed, generate agenda, ensure that the minutes are prepared and help implement decisions made

  • Maintain an active involvement in the Golf Club Managers’ Association, and the local Golf Club Managers’ network, and keep pace with developments in golf club and course management

  • Carry out any other tasks as required by the Board of Management/Committee
